Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Sick is a means to bring spiritual and physical healing to all Catholics. It is intended for:

  • Those who are dangerously ill through sickness or old age.
  • The elderly if they are weak but not dangerously ill.
  • Those who are scheduled for surgery.
  • Sick children.
  • Those being treated for diseases.
  • Those who experience a sudden medical crisis.
  • Sick people who have lost consciousness or who have lost the use of reason would have requested it if they had been in possession of their faculties.

Like any other sacrament, the Anointing of the Sick is intended for the living.  There are misconceptions that this sacrament is the same as Last Rites or should be saved until the last moments of one's life, but that is not what this sacrament is intended for. When possible, the one being anointed should be conscious and be able to actively participate in the sacrament which can include the sacrament of confession.

If you, or a loved one, requires anointing, please contact the parish office at (416) 494-6526.
